Franchise Management is enabled for the merchant group. On its own it does nothing — no store is enrolled by it.

Each store opts itself in

A location joins on its own terms. Neither switch works alone, so one franchisee can't enrol its siblings and the franchisor is never surprised by a store that joined quietly.

A card sold anywhere spends everywhere

The card tokenizes and charges at a store that never sold it. The issuer's balance comes down on its own, and the ledger records who owes whom.

The balance really existsThe card is mirrored into each participating Square account at the same balance, so it works even where the network is not reachable — Square reports it as a gift-card sale like any other.

A store can only read its own booksAnother store's ledger comes back refused, not empty. Card lookups return the last four digits only — the full number never leaves the server.

Can a Square gift card be used at more than one location?

Not on its own — a Square gift card lives in the account that sold it. INFI mirrors the card into every store in the merchant group that has opted in, at the same balance, so it can be redeemed at any of them while each store keeps using its own Square account.

Does my staff have to do anything differently?

No. They sell and swipe your own Square gift cards exactly as they do today. The mirroring and the accounting happen behind it.

What stops one location enrolling the others?

Two separate switches. The franchisor turns Franchise Management on for the merchant group, and each store then opts itself in. Neither does anything alone, so a single franchisee cannot enrol its siblings and the franchisor is never surprised by a store that joined on its own.

How do we know whose money it is?

The Gift Card Report separates a store's own outstanding liability from balances it is holding on behalf of the group, and shows the figure that store's own Square dashboard will report — so the two views never disagree without anyone noticing. Mirrored cards are also tagged in the receiving store's Square dashboard, so a balance that is not yours is visible as such.

What happens when a card is spent at a store that didn't sell it?

It is charged there like any other Square gift card. The issuing store's balance comes down without anyone doing anything, and the ledger records the issuer as owing the store that honoured it — the two sides net to zero.
