A burger is easy to put on a self-ordering kiosk. A build-your-own pizza is not. A counter employee absorbs all of this in their head. A kiosk has to make it visible, tappable, and unambiguous — which is harder to design but, done well, more accurate than a hurried counter hand during a Friday dinner rush.
Model the build as a modifier tree, not a list
The mistake is treating a pizza like a flat menu item with a pile of checkboxes. Model it as a tree instead, where each level constrains the next.
- Start with the base. Size and crust come first because they drive every downstream price. Lock these before toppings appear.
- Branch sauce and cheese. These are usually single-select with a "none / light / regular / extra" scale, not free-for-all checkboxes.
- Open toppings with placement. Every topping needs three states — whole, left half, right half — plus an optional "extra" quantity. On a touchscreen, a simple half-pie graphic that the guest taps is worth more than any dropdown.
- Apply the included-count rule. Show a running "3 of 3 toppings included" counter so the price jump on topping four never feels like a surprise.
The payoff of getting this structure right is that the guest sees the exact price update as they build. No "we'll ring it up at the counter," no argument when the total lands higher than expected. Transparency at the screen is what makes people comfortable adding one more topping — which is the whole point.

Every configuration step is a natural, low-pressure place to suggest more: a premium crust, a second cheese, garlic knots that pair with the pie, a two-liter for the family order.
The screen never forgets to ask, never feels awkward about it, and never gets slammed and skips the prompt. That consistency compounds. Keep the build consistent across every channel
